Singer-songwriter CRYSTAL SHAWANDA groeide op in het Wikwemikong indianenreservaat op het Manitoulin eiland, in het noorden van Ontario/Canada. Haar ouders waren muzikaal, waren countryfans en leerden haar zingen en gitaar spelen. Van haar oudste broer leerde ze (in het geheim) de blues. Op haar 13de maakte ze met haar vader (een vrachtwagenchauffeur) haar eerste reis naar Nashville. Vanaf haar 16de trok ze zelf naar Nashville, waar ze iedere avond als country zangeres optrad en in contact geraakte met Scott Hendricks. Afgezien van een ernstige cultuurschok, ontdekte Shawanda dat haar gevoel voor humor ervoor zorgde dat ze opviel. In 2008 debuteerde Crystal met haar country album ‘Dawn of a New Day’. De rode draad in haar leven als muzikante is de drang om te weten wat er achter ieder nummer zit, het wie en waarom van de songwriters: “ I’m always wanting tok now who are the originators, who are the mothers of invention, who inspired us all?...”.

Haar derde album, ‘The Whole World’s Got the Blues’ (2014) was na haar country periode Crystals éérste stap in de richting blues. Als opvolger van haar 7de met een JUNO-award genomineerde album (“Blues Album of the Year”), ‘Midnight Blues’ (2022) bracht Crystel in het voorbije jaar ‘SING PRETTY BLUES’ (2025) #8 uit. Het is (opnieuw) geproducet door haar man, co-schrijver en gitarist Dewayne Strobel en verscheen (opnieuw) op haar eigen New Sun Records label.

Met Son Houses “Preachin’ Blues” opent het album stevig met een blues/rocker waarin Dewayne Strobels gitaar leidt en snijdt en de harp van Stephan Hanner behoorlijk grooves. Ook op het swampy “Stop Funkin’ Me Around” schittert Crystal opnieuw met haar signature schorre, maar erg soulvolle zang die ze combineert met de rauwe emoties van blues en de verhalende ziel van country, netjes begeleid op B3/keys door Peter Keys, what’s in a name… Hoe mooi wordt daarna de ballade “Would You Know Love” ingekleurd door de achtergrondzangeressen en de blazers (Chris West). Duidelijk is dan haar statement in “I Gave Up Everything for You, ‘cept the Blues”.

Met de titelsong (“I don’t sing pretty, but I sing pretty blues to you...”)wordt de druk op de ketel hooggehouden, sluit daarna je ogen op “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely” en get back on track op het bluesy, wat funky en netjes ingeleid op orgel door Keys, “Waitin for My Lover to Call”. Tom Petty’s “Honey Bee” klinkt na Black Sabaths “Changes” niet zo zoet als het lijkt. Na “Too far to Turn Around” rest er nog “Dirty (for JC)”. Crystal sluit na de intro, beleid op bottleneck slide gitaar door haar man, vredig af met een ode aan JC. Het emotionele nummer is een open boek als ze zingt en zich zelf bloot geeft: “I quit drinkin’, I stopped getting high, but when I’m clean, I still feel dirty…”. Ook nu weer etaleert Crystal Shawanda op ‘Sing Pretty Blues’ haar muzikale veelzijdigheid: “I had a country hit on the radio but would also do a BB King cover or Etta James. I love all styles of music, but there was always something drawing me to the blues...”.
